$6.45 Million Grant to Use Big Data in Migratory Bird Conservation Awarded to University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and AMJV

Part of US National Science Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation award of $16M in grants to support science-led conservation projects. Earlier this month, the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation announced a $6.45 million grant to University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture/American Bird Conservancy (AMJV/ABC) to use data from remote sensing and machine learning to develop conservation plans that support habitat needs of birds in the Appalachian Mountains during breeding and migratory stopover. The 2023 AMJV Impact Report is available!

The 2023 AMJV Impact Report is now available for downloading and sharing!   Starting in 2022, this beautiful report has been designed annually by Liz Brewer (AMJV Outreach Specialist) to be handed out to congressional leadership during the Joint Venture DC Fly-ins (read about what happens at a JV Fly-in in the Spring 2023 AMJV newsletter).   The AMJV Impact Report provides a much-needed succinct and informative snapshot of the great work that the AMJV partnership has achieved in the region and serves as a wonderful resource for educating various stakeholders.   Feel free to share it widely!  

Partnership to Benefit Wildlife on Display at Congressional Field Day

by Liz Brewer, AMJV Outreach Specialist Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (AMJV), in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) and Division of Forestry (DOF), organized a field day to showcase their joint efforts to improve private lands for wildlife in West Virginia. Wendy Madden, representing Senator Manchin, and Todd Gunter, representing Senator Capito, attended the event to tour the work implemented through Farm Bill and Forest Stewardship programs. Field day attendees paused the tour to take a group photo in commemoration of the day.
