National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) today announced more than $1.7 million in grants to restore forest and freshwater habitat in central Appalachia, including projects in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The grants were awarded through the Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Program, a partnership between NFWF and NRCS, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Shell and in western Pennsylvania, the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The grants will help conserve species that rely on these habitats including eastern brook trout, hellbender and forest birds like Wood Thrush and Ruffed Grouse. The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia is the most comprehensive description of bird life in the Mountain State ever published. Building on the first Atlas, published in 1994, this book documents the occurrence of 170 species of breeding birds, including three new species and one whose last breeding record was in 1888.
